COWs "In Search of a Midnight Kiss" at The TriBeca Film Festival

Although Stuart Ferreyra and the team at Timecode Multimedia completed color correction, finishing and mastering of "In search of a Midnight Kiss" just two weeks ago, it was the only film to sell out all three of its screenings at last week's Tribeca Film Festival.
"In Search of a Midnight Kiss" is a black and white romantic comedy directed by award-winning comic filmmaker, Alex Holdridge. Produced by Seth Caplan and Scoot McNairy, its Executive Producer is Anne Walker-McBay ("Before Sunset," "Dazed and Confused").
Shot on HDV and treated for a progressive look, Stuart, a leader in The COW's Apple Color community, was faced with the challenge of color-correcting 1500 shots in HDV's limited color space. "The desaturation process to make the movie black and white was easy," he says, "but that step alone makes the image flat. My job was to bring out the beauty of specific elements while hiding others. Each one had several carefully placed masks (vignettes) on characters, frame corners and background elements. We were careful to placed the vignettes on strategic places according to the move of the shots because we did not want to track them due to the tight deadline we had. It was a slow and painful process.
"After we finished and rendered the first half of the movie, Alex was really concerned with the results of the new progressive look. He had made new tests that he applied to the second half and was really happy about. He decided to scrap the work we've already done and got us a brand new timeline to re-color grade.
"At our facility, we use FinalTouch (now Apple's Color) and because of the way the application works, we could not just copy paste all the hundreds of different grades we had. So we had to start from scratch, which at the end was great because it allowed us to get to an even greater level of detail on each edit.
"We also added a customized organic grain to the HD video to give it a clean 16mm film look. It took about 45 hours of rendering over 3 nights to complete the color grading.
"After that, we still had to go back and retouch a few more shots to then put the movie together, do an up-conversion to uncompressed 10bit HD, add titles, credits and output to tape.
"We pretty much finished with enough time to take the tape overnight to the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.
"This was the second black and white project I've had the chance to work with. It's challenging and demands a very different approach than a color project. The use of vignettes to create the sense of depth is extremely important. Apple's Color and all of its fantastic tools allowed me to creatively color grade a beautiful black and white digital film.
"I could not be any happier with the results. The success of 'In Search of a Midnight Kiss' is a great example of this revolution of independent desktop film making.
