The Wisdom of the COW

Part 2: ProRes for HDV, with a splash of Color

As promised, here’s part 2 of our round-up of The COW’s Collected Wisdom on ProRes. There's a lot to round up: the pace of ProRes posts has more than doubled since last week! You've made well over 200 ProRes posts spread across 11 forums! Nobody can possibly keep up with all this!

Except for us. We've read each and every one of those posts and have the highlights for you here.

This time, we examine every aspect of HDV production with ProRes, including 24P workflows. We take a closer look at ProRes and HDV in Apple Color. We’ve also got the latest tech notes from Apple, documentation you might have missed, and updates on the latest supported mice.

Really. Supported mice.

Profiles in COW-age: Community leader Steve Wargo

Steve Wargo
Steve Wargo of Show-N-Tell Video Productions and Controversial Pictures in Tempe, AZ was among the first handful of people to join The COW. A cinematographer, camera operator, editor, director, producer, production designer, actor...well, it's no wonder that Steve's a leader in a variety of production-oriented forums:

Cinematography
HD High End
Indie Film & Documentary
Sony Cinealta HD.

He's also very active in the Arizona Final Cut Pro User Group forum.

If we had a Harley forum, Steve would be a leader there too.

Steve and his wife Jackie have completed over 4000 projects since they founded Show-N-Tell in 1983. SNT continues to focus on video production, multimedia and equipment rental. This is how most of us got to know Steve, but his film business is firing up in a big way -- big enough that he and Jackie formed Controversial Pictures to focus there. He began as an extra in such movies as Used Cars, The Gauntlet and Cloud Dancer. His first job as cinematographer was for director Ken Kennedy's "Aggie - The Farmer's Daughter" in 1990. Steve's growing cinematography has also fed back into his video shooting, today primarily with the Sony F-900 Cinealta HD camera. Show-N-Tell's work has won 17 Telly Awards, Also multiple Communicator, NCMPR, ITVA, MCA-I, and others.

Here are some links for you to see what else Steve is up to.
Here's his profile at The COW
Here are some of the films he's worked on. He worked on the movie, The Controller (a lot of production stills at that site). Here's the featurette

http://www.taperingsleeve.com/PsychoManor.html
There are a whole lot more film and televison projects listed on Steve's IMDb page.
His bio there will tell you about his amazing brush with death. You really need to check that out.

We've been delighted to have Steve such an active member so long, and so helpful across many more forums than the ones listed here.

PS. Like you, Steve's needs change as his business grows -- so you'll also regularly find him in The COW's Classifieds, For Sale community, both buying and selling.
